About the World Clock

Vattoo's World Clock displays the current local time in over 20 major cities across every inhabited time zone — updated live every second using your browser's built-in JavaScript Intl API. All time calculations happen locally on your device, meaning the clock is accurate, instant, and works even offline once the page has loaded.

Daylight Saving Time transitions are handled automatically. The clock correctly accounts for DST changes in the US, Europe, Australia and all other DST regions. Cities near the equator — Singapore, Dubai, Mumbai — do not observe DST, so their UTC offset remains constant throughout the year.

Time Zones Explained

A time zone is a region that observes the same standard time. The world is divided into 24 primary zones, each roughly 15 degrees of longitude apart, representing a one-hour difference. The reference point is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) — set at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. Cities east of Greenwich are ahead of UTC (UTC+1, UTC+2…) and cities west are behind (UTC−5, UTC−8…).

India uses UTC+5:30 — a non-standard 30-minute offset chosen as a geographic compromise when India unified its regional zones in 1906. Nepal goes further with UTC+5:45. China uses a single UTC+8 for its entire territory despite spanning what would naturally be five separate time zones.

How to Schedule Across Time Zones

Use the Timezone Converter above to find the current offset between your city and a colleague's. Then propose a meeting window where both parties fall within normal working hours (9 AM – 6 PM local). Always communicate the agreed time in UTC to avoid confusion from DST transitions — "15:00 UTC on Monday" is unambiguous to everyone regardless of location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the world clock accurate?
Yes — the world clock uses the browser's built-in Intl.DateTimeFormat API, which derives offsets from the IANA timezone database — the same database used by operating systems, programming languages and international standards bodies. It accounts for DST automatically and is accurate to the second.
Does it handle Daylight Saving Time?
Yes — DST transitions are handled automatically by the browser's Intl API, which is updated with DST changes worldwide. London correctly shows BST in summer and GMT in winter without any manual adjustment.
How does the timezone converter work?
Select your source city in the "From" dropdown and your destination in "To". The converter shows the current time in the destination zone and the hour offset between the two — updated every second. This lets you instantly calculate what any local time translates to in another city.
Why does India use a 30-minute offset?
India Standard Time (IST) is UTC+5:30. This 30-minute offset was chosen in 1906 as a geographic compromise between India's easternmost and westernmost extents. It has remained unchanged since, making IST one of the most recognisable non-standard time zone offsets in the world.
What is UTC?
UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time — the primary global time standard used by airlines, financial markets, internet infrastructure, and scientific institutions. Unlike local time zones, UTC never changes for DST, making it the universal reference point for unambiguous international scheduling.
